What to remember to do when designing a chip.

  • Use Schmitt triggers for digital inputs.
  • Use sufficiently strong buffers for digital outputs.
  • Do clock distribution properly. Slow clock signal buffers, long wires, etc. may cause incorrect clocking order of circuit elements.
  • Strong digital output buffers may cause interference with analog circuitry in mixed-signal designs. Such outputs should be able to be disabled if they are not always needed (a simple AND will do that).
